Re: Manila Train Mutilation, The Man is Still Alive

many of these people live right there beside the tracks. thats how difficult life is here in the philippines. and the government does nothing to give them better opportunities to earn. their major livelihood goes by operating manual foot-pushed powered trolleys. Thats a contrivance used to travel utilizing the train tracks as their avenues. fun when youre new, no choice when you dont have money for the legal transport fares and very dangerous if you think about it for long. when they are operating one and the train is approaching, they usually pushed on stubbornly and just go out of the way when there too little time left. even the passengers are used to that mode. its a living. dangerous but its legal. most of them thinks its better than prostitution, or stealing.
great answer - those who have never seen the philippines or similar countries will never understand
my wife is a filipina and when on holiday i was amazed to see the squatters on the train line in metro manila
it is just something you don't expect to ever see - it is virtually surreal

and this photo was taken at 9.30pm on a friday night on a road in the middle of nowhere . . . . and yet, the locals are still manning their little fruit hut in the hope of making just a little money to survive on

it is both amusing and tragic when some people call the filipinos and others in similar countries savages. western world people are much more savage. they just hide behind their self righteousness. i have seen both the best and worst of australian's and filipino's and the filipino's win hands down for being great people
the filipino's might rip you off, but that is to survive
when the australian's rip you off it is for nothing but greed
neither way is right, but at filipino's only do bad things because they are so desperate

and of course there is a good chance the locals have no training - there is no point in calling an ambulance over there, because with the traffic, it hasn't got a hope of making it in time anyway. it is quicker to try and get someone to hospital yourself

Damn, those stumps moving and the guy's calm demeanor. Feel bad for the relative who came over to see him like that.
