No, the hip joint is still there. If you look at the video again, as he's laying there, he moves his left stump a few times... and when they pick his legs up, it looks like the train caught him mid way up the thigh.

I am a physician. This completely defies medical logic at first appearance. However, suffice it to say, the arteries are composed of smooth muscle which can constrict to stop excessive bleeding. A complete transection such as this poor fellow has, has a much better prognosis than a cut running up and down the artery. Now, do not get me wrong. I am betting this man died but you can never say anything with absolution in medicine. I have seen people die from nothing and live through everything...
