Man Who Jumped Off Bridge Tries, in Vain, to Rescue Himself

Maharashtra state, India. A 24-year-old marketer at an agricultural company, S.S.S.R., killed himself by jumping from the Tapi river bridge. A search for his body continued late into night, but so far it has been unsuccessful.

The video seems to show the man trying to keep himself afloat, but without success. No information on why he decided to kill himself.

Re: Man Who Jumped Off Bridge Tries, in Vain, to Rescue Himself

I doubt there's much experienced swimmers on here but is it even possible to stay afloat once you start sinking in water? I've seen people of the same weight and height jump into a pool and some sink right away while some just float effortlessly

Yes, it’s called swimming.

Maybe his legs were injured? He seemed to know how to swim, but was running out of steam.

I’ve found the best way to conserve your energy when in water is to lay on your back and stay still. You can pretty much stay afloat without doing much because your lungs being halfway above the water keep you buoyant.

Honestly, I have no sympathy for anybody who makes it to adulthood without knowing how to swim. Unless you live in the Sahara desert or something

It depends on fat percentage on the body and amount of air in the lungs. Both help one to be more buoyant. But, no matter your size, you either sink or swim.
P.S. Float on your back if you can't swim!

Re: Man Who Jumped Off Bridge Tries, in Vain, to Rescue Himself

He had no clue how to swim, and just burned all his energy in his panic.

As stated earlier in the thread, you can float on your back. You can also tread water in the vertical position he was in by lightly kicking in a circular motion and spreading your arms across the surface of the water, kind of like you're flying in slow motion, this method requires more energy though.

Some people are just screwed by genetics though. It's fairly rare, but some people are negative buoyant, which means they'll sink as soon as they get in the water. You can overcome that with proper technique. The ex-Navy SEAL David Goggins has a vid about it and shows how to overcome it (his hands and legs were bound together in this one.)

Yes I was a swim instructor. If you lay on your back with your arms outstretched and relax your entire body you can keep your nose and mouth above water enough to stay alive. It takes practice though to lose all fear. It's pretty ironic that so many after they drown and die float to the top like that. The lungs act as two airbags to keep you afloat but if someone exhales all their breath they can sink
