Definitely. Bystanders would hear the loud crunching. I mistook it for the sound of two vehicles making impact. A lazy metallic shredding sound. Very much like my car made many moons prior when I reversed into another car and made the damage worse as I tried to correct my mistake. In this case, the bus driver was trying to move the bus off of the victim. Which only crushed him more. That was the sound I heard, with my back turned on the incident, but wondering at the chorus of horrified screams and shouting. Now, when I do hear 2 cars in a minor altercation, my heart skips a beat, wondering if another poor Londoner has slipped under the wheels of another double decker. I got a close up view of the fellow as I ran over to see if he could be helped. His exposed flesh and sinews were still pulsating. I couldn't feel a pulse. But I reported to the emergency line another witness was through to, that there was a chance he was still alive since his flesh was moving. But it's the sounds of that night that make me feel queasy on recollection. Not his mangled limbs and torn jeans. Nor blood. The wheels missed his head. So his family could have had an open casket. |
