Jose E.L.C. was killed out of revenge as he was an ex Farc member. Many ex Farc members have been murdered as reprisal or revenge killings by individuals/groups bitter about the kidnappings and massacres carried out by the Farc during the 50 year conflict and after the 2016 peace accord.

These killings often occur in zones formerly controlled by the Farc. As illegal armed groups (like the ELN or the Clan del Golfo) fight for control over drug trafficking routes or coca cultivation. Former rebels are targeted to eliminate local leadership or potential rivals.
