I don't think the kid was harmed. He seemed to be fast asleep, even with that loud ass music. When the mom gets shot, you see him kind of open his eyes a little bit as if the noise startled him, but then he seems to have gone back to sleep. If arguments like this happen all the time in that small room, or if he was familiar with the assailants, he prolly wouldn't think anything of it.

I'm having a bit of trouble taking this video at face value Is there any backstory on this at all?

At first, I thought the same thing as you. After going back over the video, I can almost without a doubt tell you that the child was not shot. Freeze frame the 0:35 mark. You can clearly see the child's face next to the mother's head which is clearly stooped over. (Freeze the frame and look at the bottom left corner of the video).
We are seeing the back of the mother's head when she is shot for the second time.
Another indication that it is the mother and not the child. The person who is getting shot in the back-top of the head most definitely has straight hair (from the 0:33-36 mark). The child clearly has curly light-brownish hair whereas the mother has straight dark-brownish hair.
So, I am pretty sure the child was not shot.
