There were no geniuses involved here. The car door opener didn't look first and the biker was cutting things too close. Yes that oncoming truck in the middle of the road didn't give him much of a margin for error, but he could've pulled over before he got to the car and waited for it to pass.

it's easy to do though. and i say this as someone who cycles and drives. i'm always worried about "getting doored" when i'm on the bike |

I am always worried about this on my scooter. I try and keep at least one lane away from the parking lane, if it's possible. If it isn't possible, I go really paranoid and slow down, and watch like a hawk.

With a lot of crazy people, and unexpected event, i do the same.. I trust my eyes, not the green light.. when moving between lanes, i look three or four times.
