I wonder if hurting bears is as bad as hurting cows in India. Could explain why they were so reluctant to try something out. I mean yes its a bear and 10 unarmed people wouldn't be able to stop it but they could at least try to scare it away, which is understandably difficult if the bear is wounded and limping.
