Re: Man Killed by Tire Rim
Not really, Acceleration/deceleration matters in the end. If you get hit by a car going 50 miles an hour, you will end up a bloody mess. If you get hit by a cargo train, 100 times more massive, going at 3 miles an hour...you may walk away with no injuries at all(even though it has an order of magnitude greater momentum). The train will just push you away. |

Re: Man Killed by Tire Rim
That's the thing, you keep illustrating scenarios where within a tiny fraction of either end of the probability spectrum, the result is measured as proof that you're right. The rim isn't moving along a set of tracks at 3 mph. It isn't a car going 50 mph into another identical car full of screaming infants. It's a gd heavy wheel falling off a platform. It isn't falling straight down. There are other forces at work here, as it tilts forward and falls the bottom is on the platform, which creates swing. This multiplies the force of the "hammer" end of the wheel. Speed/acceleration are inconsequential as there is not much needed to create enough momentum to cause devastating injuries. Possibly more than "3 miles per hour", but not much.... |

Re: Man Killed by Tire Rim
I would probably take the oncoming car instead of the wall. With the car, if large debris like an engine block doesn't go thru you, I think you would have a better chance of survival. With the wall you are going to stop quickly. The oncoming car your body has a chance of a more glancing blow. So I think these collisions are more complicated than simple momentum / kinetic energy equations in a first year university Newtonian physics course, calculus based or not. In this tire rim video, I think knowledge of trauma is more important than basic physics. How much his skull deformed, brain got scrambled etc., but I think the money shot is at 32 seconds, his neck is probably broken (I have no medical training). |

Maybe they aren't a waste, though, evidently. Also, the second guy, who went over the safety regulations, stood about 15 feet back because he knew something bad was going to happen.
