Malleswara Rao, 53, had come for a parasailing event organised by Indian Aero Sports and Science Club and Coimbatore Medical College and Hospital to commemorate the latter's golden jubilee. Rao, who was the second person to hook up to the parachute and had paid Rs 500 for the ride, made an unsuccessful first attempt from a mini-truck as the wires of the parachute got tangled on the ground because of strong winds. Witnesses said that during Rao's second attempt, the co-ordinator had blown his whistle for the truck to drive on even before the safety hook had been latched on to the businessman's gear. As the truck moved and the attached parachute began soaring, Rao was seen hanging on to the chute's wires (in picture on top) with his hands in the absence of the safety hook taking his body weight. The organisers noticed the slip and stopped the truck but the parachute remained suspended more than 70 feet above the ground because of the strong winds. According to the witnesses, Rao let go around 50 seconds into the flight, falling with a heavy thud amid screams from scores of onlookers. Although the medical college was one of the organisers, it had not kept an ambulance or emergency team on standby, police said. Rao had to be taken to a nearby private hospital in the same mini-truck. Doctors pronounced him dead on arrival. Babu, the head of the club, has been booked for causing death by negligence. the truck should have immediately driven quickly with the wind(towards the camera), which would have caused the chute to descend. that, or release or cut the cable and hope for the best... anything but just park there while the guy is hanging on helplessly in gale force wind  |
