While the gap between the slats may have initially been wide enough to fit their head through, everything changed as soon as they shifted their body weight onto the lower slats and their feet left the ground. Because the slats are all mechanically linked, any force applied to the lower slats is also going to act on the upper slats. If they can't get at least one foot solidly on the ground with enough leverage to unweight themselves, they are hopelessly trapped. |
