Magni M16 Gyrocopter Hits Suspended Utility Lines Near Dam Killing Two
Italy. A tragic gyrocopter crash in northern Italy killed two people yesterday after the lightweight aircraft struck suspended service cables near the Campliccioli Dam. The accident occurred at around 11:30 a.m. local time in the upper Antrona Valley within the Piedmont region, near the Swiss border. Footage shows the two-seat autogyro flying over the mountainous terrain before striking the utility lines, immediately erupting into a ball of fire, and plummeting onto a grassy area next to Lake Campliccioli. Alessandro Angelo M. (62), an engineer from Premeno who was piloting the aircraft and was an active member of the Croce Alata airfield association in Megolo and Antonella P (63), from the Milan area, who was the pilot's sister-in-law died in the accident. The pair had taken off from the Megolo airfield earlier that morning for a recreational sightseeing flight over the Alps. The pilot's brother witnessed the entire event from the ground and was treated by emergency services for severe shock. Initial reports suggest that the area was experiencing sudden low cloud cover and thick fog. Investigators believe the pilot encountered a wall of clouds and was attempting to execute a sharp turn to double back when the aircraft inadvertently struck the hard-to-see utility cables. Emerging reports from regional news outlets state that authorities are checking whether the flight had proper authorization to operate at low altitude within that specific dam infrastructure zone. |
