I would’ve wholly supported the right of peaceful tribes to go about their business as long as they left the settlers who were moving westward across the frontier alone. They didn’t so yeah, they made it open warfare and got creamed.

To have a morally recognizable real property claim you need to be occupying it, putting to beneficial use, and/or effectively defending it. For the vast vast majority of North America the ‘natives’ were doing none of those 3 and so had no moral claim, and were technologically barely out of the Stone Age so their awful loss in the armed conflict was all but inevitable. Had it been anybody but westerners they’d likely all have been wiped out and nobody would be worrying about treaties.
