At Least Nine Dead From Toxic Gas Poisoning at Shipyard

Sitakunda, Bangladesh

At least nine workers died from toxic gas poisoning, and several more fell ill, at the Ferdous Steel Ship Recycling/Breaking Yard in Sitakunda.

The deaths occurred whilst dismantling work was being performed on an old scrap LNG carrier, over twenty years old. Although it was a Friday - the weekly holiday - the workers were called in regardless. As it transpired, there was high concentrations of hydrogen sulphide - the "rotten egg" gas - within the ship's confined spaces.

Even hours after the incident, a concentration of 10.8ppm of hydrogen sulphide was detected inside the ship. It is believed the concentration at the time of the incident could have exceeded 100ppm, sufficient to cause death within minutes. An investigation committee has been formed.

Enraged locals entered the shipyard and engaged in vandalism. A total of around one million taka - around $8,160 - has been pledged to the families of each of the deceased.

That's the correct smell. That's what posts like it's basically natural gas. Most places around the world ejaculin, it cause they do that, so David links you can smell it and know to get out of the way and call emergency services to deal with it. In this case, it builds in your home or business, you recall your local emergency services and are the utility company to come out there and cut the gas off. Of course, they were dismantling a ship that likely had natural gas on board it somewhere. They probably did not know what was going on.Normally of the smells not ejected in it, you wouldn't be able to smell it and they'll still do the same thing as you can see there.Rest in peace to all of them, 🙏😇🙏😇🙏😇🙏😇🙏😇🙏😇

Hydrogen sulfide is some nasty stuff. If it was over 100ppm then they probably croaked in under a minute.

Had a gas detector signal off for H. sulfide in a mine once and we ran over each other trying to get out.

I’m not surprised, the working conditions over there are atrocious. No safety gear, wearing flip flops.

Re: At Least Nine Dead From Toxic Gas Poisoning at Shipyard

Read about the 1937 London School Explosion, which is the reason they put ethyl Mercaptan in natural gas, which in it's normal state, is odorless.

I suspect THESE guys died from the odorless natural gas, which has no smell, rather than the Mercaptan, which has a smell. It is normally put in at the dispensing location. I don't know if that is used on ships.

I did read of a supercarrier, which they assume was carrying natural gas WITHOUT an odorant, off the coast of Africa. It disappeared en-route, and was never found. Unfortunately, it had the ship owner's entire family on board, traveling in the owner's cabin, on the trip. So they all died as well. The assumption was that it detonated somewhere at sea, and no one heard it blow up. I doubt they will EVER find that ship.

You probably suspect wrong seeing as it clearly states it was Hydrogen Sulphide. Just saying.
