At Least Eight Killed After Molten Iron Spill in Indian Steel Plant
Visakhapatnam, Andhra Pradesh, India At least eight workers at a steel plant were killed and several others critically injured when a ladle transporting molten iron at approximately 1,600°C (2,910°F) fell or collapsed during operations, spilling the superheated material and igniting a fire. The bodies of the deceased were charred beyond immediate recognition. Around 20 workers were in the vicinity at the time of the incident. Six workers suffered serious burn injuries, with some sustaining burns over more than 70% of their bodies, and were shifted to a steel plant hospital and other facilities for treatment. Prime Minister Narendra Modi announced payments of 200,000 rupees ($2,090) to the next of kin of those killed, and 50,000 ($520) to the injured. The accident is the deadliest at the Visakhapatnam Steel Plant since a 2012 explosion in the oxygen plant that killed 16 people. |

God, molten iron, now that's nasty  When I was a toddler a neighbour burned some things including a door, and a couple hours after the fire ended I grabbed a piece of molten metal from the ashes (it had become solid again, of course). I don't really remember the pain, but I know I ran through the garden numerous times, crying and shaking my hand  Yes, I'm a very smart person  For those who may wonder like I did : "Pradesh" refers to a province or territory in various South Asian languages.
