Agree. The original roadbuilders cut the hillside for the road, but did not stabilize the cut. Soil is a fluid and it will always seek its original angle of repose, unless it is held in place with a retaining wall or similar.  |

In tropical climates, the soil grows extremely fast. Coming from temperate climes where soil develops at a rate of 1 to 2 inches per century, Americans and Europeans have trouble understanding this. In tropical places with year-round warmth, sunshine, abundant rainfall, and extremely fast growth, the soil grows and collects at rates of feet per year, rounding off even the best-cut angles. It is a constant battle with nature to cut back road embankments and cuts.

Added to above^ Retaining walls are not an ideal long term solution in these climates because even well-engineered walls soon buckle and bow forward from the weight of the soil building above them. There's no real good engineering solution, just constant maintenance with heavy equipment. |
