Lawyer Shot in Chest by Assailant with Homemade Gun

India, Criminal and Civil lawyer R.K.S, 45, was returning from his morning walk yesterday when he was shot in the chest by an assailant wielding a desi katta, which is an illegal homemade gun often made from scrap metal.

CCTV footage captured the dramatic scene where the attackers' motorcycle initially failed to start, forcing them to threaten bystanders with their weapons before successfully fleeing.

Police arrested the gunman R.S. after a confrontation. The suspect attempted to flee near PAC Gate and opened fire on the police team, who retaliated by shooting him in both legs.

During the arrest, police recovered 2 country-made pistols and ammo along with the motorcycle used in the crime.

Preliminary findings suggest the killing stemmed from a long-standing village dispute or election rivalry.

The victim had formally reported death threats from the accused just one day before his murder.

Consequently, a case has been registered against a sub-inspector and two other police personnel for failing to act on those warnings.

The lawyer handled a variety of cases, ranging from property disputes to criminal defense. He was a well-known member of the Banaras Bar Association.

He had been a licensed lawyer since 1995, making him a senior figure in the local legal community with over 30 years of experience.

Besides his legal career, he was a prominent local political figure. He served as the former village head. Investigators believe the motive stems from a struggle for local political dominance and past election disputes.

A second suspect, who was driving the motorcycle seen in the CCTV footage, is still on the run.

I owned a KTM 495 for a while in the 80’s. It was insanely fast and reliable. Loved that bike.

I'd like to see a set of drawings for one of those desi katta guns.

Re: Lawyer Shot in Chest by Assailant with Homemade Gun

Ok! HERE is what I found out about "Desi-katta" guns:

Since 1959, India has had one of the strictest gun control law frameworks in the world. HOWEVER, in SPITE of that, India now is 2nd ONLY TO THE U.S. in the number of unlicensed and illegal guns possessed by it's citizens. 80% of the crimes in India are done with these "Desi-Katta" or unlicensed guns. The guns may be made by amateurs, but are also turned out and sold by skilled gunsmiths as a regular source of income. The demand is driven by the high public regard for people who have fire-arms, with them being viewed as "tough guys" and "real men" and it is widespread for people to carry these guns in public.
The ones made in small villages are generally found to be roughly built, low power, and to have a low lethality rate. However, the ones built by actual gunsmiths are typically very capable and dangerous, and work as well as any mass-produced fire-arm on the regular market.

I assume the differences are in the fact that an actual gunsmith would have the proper tools and equipment to turn out a capable firearm, whereas a person working in a small village as a blacksmith or repairman, would lack a lot of tools and skills to turn out a very good weapon.

I am still trying to find a drawing for one of these weapons.

The weapon used in THIS assassination, almost looks like a sawed-off shotgun, although it is pretty hard to see clearly. But obviously, it was good enough to kill the victim in this case.

The perpetrators, on the other hand, I would be very reluctant to credit with much more than a low-to-average intelligence, as they sure seemed to have nearly bungled the job in this case. Not just leaving the bike running was one symptom. But if they could not leave the bike running, probably due to every expensive gas, it would seem they were operating at the very frugalist limits of the hit-man world. Maybe even Fruglier! or even Frugalist! limits.

I suspect they BOTH were either hit by a train shortly afterwards, or suffered some other disaster, such as running over a sheep,
being struck by lightning, or having hot oil from a cooking stall splashed all over them.
