True, they don't have the death penalty in the UK and people do re-offend. But that's not the point I'm making. It does confirm that the systems we already have in place do not work. Asking the question "why did he do that?" is a great start. Much better than simply saying, "OK, you did this, now you must pay". Compassion is always more healthy than anger. Having a death penalty totally ignores the problem of free will and the surrounding environmental factors that influence our behaviours. It also teaches that killing people is acceptable when you feel it is justified to do so. The funny thing is, the people who commit the crimes felt very similar, which is what allowed them to carry out their crimes in the first place. As for saving money by killing them, it depends how. In USA it costs more to execute a criminal than it does to keep them locked up for life. Yet people still cry out for the death penalty and cite saving money as being a main concern. |
