Knife Wielding Man Shot and Killed by Police
Bremen police said an investigation was underway after a man was fatally shot during a police operation in the city's Gröpelingen neighborhood; they referred the case to the public prosecutor today, a day after the incident. According to local media the deceased was a 54-year-old Moroccan man. Lüder Fasche, Bremen's police union leader, defended the actions of the officers involved in the operation. He said the man was shot after attacking an officer with a knife, citing this video circulating on the internet as evidence that the officers had acted appropriately. |

According to prosecutor Frank Passade on Friday afternoon, the man's apartment had been terminated without notice because he had suffered from property damage several times in the past. Representatives of the housing association were on site to inspect the apartment on Thursday. They were accompanied by the police. A mental disorder in the man was not excluded. When the police tried to put the 54-year-old on guard for a social psychiatric examination, the situation had escalated because the person concerned had not wanted it. |
