I'm so confused how he landed..he fell backwards on his ass or he got spun around somehow

.. I've seen people get hit alot harder than that and survive. maybe he was just too old and had a heart attack during

Probably a basal skull fracture, which takes a frighteningly small impact to inflict and is mostly fatal.
