There was ABSOLUTELY NOTHING that prevented them from over-running U.S. troops, capturing thousands of American citizens, and then setting them on fire in cages, like they did with foreign pilots in Iraq and Syria. Those who criticize Biden for getting us out of Afghanistan ignore the fact that TRUMP is the one who signed the departure agreement, and left Biden holding the bag. Biden was smart enough to negotiate a relatively quiet and peaceful departure. Biden is the one who saw it successfully done.

Well, that would have depended on Trump. But with his big mouth, and wanting to always win EVERY argument, I doubt it would have been peaceful at all. Antagonizing people who can kill 6000 of your citizens is NOT a good idea.
Biden engaged the Taliban for 3 months before the end, and used our allies such as Switzerland to help as much as possible. His entire effort was on keeping things low key, and getting everyone out. Sometimes speaking softly and not pissing people off is the best. But Biden was not prepared for the quick collapse. All of our top government people estimated a year at least, which meant we would have 6 months to move people out, and get the country cleared of U.S. and British and other Allied citizens.
The Taliban themselves were NOT prepared for the rapid fall of the Afghan government. THEY THEMSELVES estimated it would be at least a YEAR before they won Afghanistan. They told this to a British journalist who had dealt with them for over 10 years, and who actually had phone numbers for the top Taliban leadership. The Taliban actually personally called him in London to ask if he would come over and interview the Taliban leadership, with NO restrictions on him.
They didn't know that their enemies would completely collapse in 7 days, and they had no plans at all in place when it happened.
Our departure COULD have been a complete bloodbath. During the whole time, all I could think about was those pilots burning in cages here on DR, and when that would start with Americans as everything collapsed. I was SO glad and relieved when it did not happen.

It seems like you'r very statisfied how his administration handeled it (let's be real biden is just doing the paperwork here, he is a bit too old for more). The people falling from the sky would quite disagree on that one. It was handeled in the most chaotic and worst possible way, simply because there was no actual Plan on how to do it. Actually there was a Plan left from the trump administration on how to do the procedure, but it had trumps name on it and was shredded as nazi propaganda basically. The new "plan" became "gtfo as fast as possible no fucks given". Our goverment in germany was widely critizised for this "no plan" approach as they just went along with the biden administration. I really can't understand how anybody would praise this giant failure of a "retreat".

If you can find ANYONE in the military who says we were ever "winning" in Afghanistan, please let me know. The loss of Afghanistan was inevitable from 2005 on. Just like Vietnam, we never controlled any part of the country.
Trump had no plan for organized withdrawal. If he had, the military would have implemented it. But there was nothing there, and when things collapsed in a week, it was clear to Biden that this idiotic war was over, and we needed to do nothing more than leave. Which we did with minimal losses. The people falling from airplanes were Afchanis, and maybe they should have stepped up and fought harder to save their country. They didn't before, the never did while we were there, and they didn't when we left. You can't make people who don't give a shit about their country, fight for it.
Yes, our departure was a success. Wait 10 years and see how it is viewed in history.
Just like the Iraq and Syrian wars, this was a stupid effort that had no real foundation, and was doomed from the beginning.
Next time you talk to any military vets who fought in Afghanistan, ask them how things went. I know PLENTY of them, and have never heard anything other than that it was a clusterfuck from the word go. Those are the guys (and women, I worked with a female marine who had 3 combat tours in Iraq) (my next door neighbor is still an armorer on A-10 aircraft) who will straighten you right out.
