60-year-old Atiq A. and his brother were shot dead while Atiq was being escorted for a court-mandated medical checkup in front of a horde of reporters. The three perpetrators had posed as journalists, and made no attempt to escape after committing the murder.

Atiq, who had formerly served in the Indian Parliament and the local state assembly, had more than 100 criminal cases registered against him, and had been in jail since 2019.

In 2016, Atiq and his henchmen assaulted staff at a university for punishing two students who had been caught cheating during exams. He was transferred to another prison in 2019 after getting several guards at his old jail to beat up a businessman for not paying an extortion. Earlier this year, A. and his gang had been accused of murdering the key witness to the 2005 murder of a rival politician.

Atiq's teenage son had been shot dead by police days earlier. Atiq's last words, in response to whether he attended the funeral, were "They did not take us, so we did not go."
