I just read a comment someone wrote about suicide being selfish and that's a popular and inaccurate belief. Please just take a minute to read this because I believe that if you had the benefit of another person's perspective, you may come to understand that depression is an insidious and potentially lethal disease that has to be monitored and treated carefully just like any other life threatening condition.

This is my personal experience and the way that I have come to understand how this can happen. What I'm talking about here isn't quite universal but the understanding I have from my talks with doctors, psychiatrists, psychologists, counselors, nurses and many patients like myself.

When someone has gotten to the point where this looks like a viable option, all the fight you had in you to preserve yourself and all the protective thoughts like "I wouldn't want to do this to my family" have eroded away so completely that it's just you alone with the depression and pain and all you know at that point is that the horror that you're living in right now feels like it will not ever get better and it is all-consuming.

You're in such a bad place right then that you're able to think only about making that torture stop. When one is this far into it, they are not even capable of realizing that the "help" they are trying to find right in that instant is the very thing that is going to bring the hurt to their family and friends. When you are in that dangerous frame of mind AND there is what you perceive to be at least a "likely" method (to be successful,) you are impulsive about it and don't want to be discovered and saved so you work quickly toward your goal.

When I say impulsive, I mean that it can be just a scant couple of minutes from when the idea to do this materializes in your head to the moment where your brain, in its desperation, decides "yes, this is the only valid solution."

The opportunity to try to get relief plus the desire to prevent this pain from continuing equals the impulsive, desperate action that devastates the people you leave behind. Yes, I am saying that it can happen so quickly that you're well into it before you realize (if at all) that it has already started.

21 years ago today, just about right at the time I am writing this line, (I have chills) my attempt was discovered and there was a long and fairly large scale medical intervention and, thankfully, I survived.

If anyone who may read this now or whenever in the future is depressed and contemplating suicide, please, please don't try to follow through with it- at least for right now. If you've ever had some wonderful moment of joy in your life, I need you to realize that so much more of that can be in your future with treatment.

There truly is strength in asking for help- battling depression alone or untreated feels practically impossible. Reaching out to get some help is a strength because you are trying to win against a powerful enemy. That's nothing anyone should ever feel shame for. Depression isn't a character flaw or a weakness. It isn't your fault and you didn't ask for it. It is just a chemical imbalance in the single most complex organ in our body. Help and hope are available to you if you just ask for it.

I think it was more about the lack of consideration for the fact that you put your own feelings and impulses ahead of others'. Yes, there are horrible mind states people can be in like severe clinical depression, but most people still have the ability to take care of other business that's important to them (like shopping, playing video games, and jerking off) before offing themselves - it's a baser human who commits suicide knowing the pain they are causing others and the mess they are leaving others to clean up.

If you truly believe your family is better off without you, and you want to stop adding to their suffering, why not suicide somewhere far away and secluded where they are unlikely to find you?

Calculatingly setting up a suicide on social media in a place people you know will definitely find you is not much of an 'impulsive act of desperation".

I don't think the fall was far enough to break his neck - his body mass doesn't appear to be heavy enough to have done the trick either. I can't zoom in on his face, but he appears to be conscious for too long to have broken his neck.

I just don't think his buddies even knew CPR - and it was probably too late anyway - you can see where the video was edited to cut out the time between the hanging and the arrival of others. It only takes about four minutes to die that way.

It's because depression lies to you. When you are lying in bed alone and can barely take care of yourself, it whispers in your ear to do it - no one loves you, you'll never be anything, you're a loser, the world would be better off without you. I'm medicated and have a great support system. When I'm in the throes of a really bad episode, I hear that whispering. Some of these people don't have what I do and it is easier to just check out.

My sister, her son and a very close family friend all committed suicide with 3 years of each other.
As devastating as it was for the people left behind, if things are that bad that you would rather not live, how can living on be a solution.

Some may say it is selfish, the amount of strength you have to have to kill yourself, fight against that instinct to survive, is tremendous.

I hope to see them all one day and I am glad their personal suffering has ended.

Damn. I always hate seeing young people commit suicide and the fact that his friends showed up to try to help makes it even worse. We can't know anyone's pain, really but it is a permanent solution to problems that can be overcome. The way the neck looks too is always eerie in such videos.
