At about 17:00 on January 22, a hostage-taking incident occurred at the entrance of the Experimental High School Affiliated to Yunnan Normal University.

After the man wounded 7 people with a knife, he took a student hostage with a knife. At around 18:40, the special police on the scene killed the suspect and rescued the hostage safely.

According to the police report, the suspect W. M. was from Kunming (male, 56 years old), and his crime caused 7 people to be injured to varying degrees.

The hostage taker was wearing a peaked cap and a mask, with his back leaning against the school gate wall, his left hand holding a white horn from time to time, and his right holding a knife without leaving the hostage.

Many schoolbags were scattered on the ground, and an injured student was lying on the ground not far away waiting for rescue.

During the incident, the suspect asked for water and asked to see a reporter, and it had to be a female reporter, and he was only given ten minutes. The suspect needs someone to talk to, and she happens to be nearby. The female reporter wanted to stabilize the suspect's mood.

When communicating with him constantly, she gave the special police unit the opportunity to control the situation which they did by shooting him in the head.

According to statistics based on public information, there have been 8 hostage cases since 2020, and this incident is the third hostage incident in the country since January this year.
