Islam is not the only thing wrong with Iranian culture. It's the entire way of life there and how it has responded to globalization. It's in a smaller way similar to the cultural shift in late communist Russia. Here you have a culture of status-obsessed, patriarchal, religious, and very family oriented practices and beliefs contending with total lack of differentiation between state and private life. So people are forced to bend morality and adopt double lives, so as to avoid state and religious scrutiny. In the community where I live, the Iranians I know who had migrated during the immediate fall of the Shah are totally different from the "new" Iranians.
