Re: Homeless Man Set on Fire - Kingston, Jamaica

The burns are incredibly painful until you get through the dermis where all the nerve endings are. That's 3rd degree burn territory.

However... the smoke and heat can cause a lot of uncomfortable short term effects like:
The skin and muscles tightening to the point where you can be strangled to death from it.
Painful burns in all of your airways.
Brain swelling, causing a number of issues.
Most people die from suffocation while being burned alive.
That was informative, thanks
It seems burn victims suffer more than I'd ever imagined
Killed by your own skin, geez

Yeah, it's truly an awful way to go, especially if you don't live in a 1st world country. Burns that cover even 30% of the body can be fatal. And if you're lucky enough to get to a decent burn treatment center, you're still not out of the woods... complications like blood clots, infection, low blood volume, and edema are common and can be fatal.

Re: Homeless Man Set on Fire - Kingston, Jamaica

I remember to hear when the burns reaches nerve terminals and destroy/burn them, the person cannot feel anymore pain. This happens after ~2-5 minutes under a continue burning.

2 to 5 minutes?
that's a long ass time to be alive & on fire. >,<

Believe it or not, once you get third degree burns, the nerves are toast and the burn no longer hurts. Not even counting the respiratory damage.

at that point, it's irreversible, right?

Re: Homeless Man Set on Fire - Kingston, Jamaica

Instead of doing something simple like taking off my shirt and using it to smother the flames I'll video this poor fuck burning to death so I can post it on the interwebz and be famous.
The guy filming might be to proud of his Ben Sherman to ever use it to put the flames out!

Not necessarily. Nerve damage can be repaired but it depends on what kind of nerve, the severity of the injury, the location on the body, the quality of medical treatment pre and post surgery (if necessary), how your body responds to rehab, etc. But even in the best circumstances we're not talking about 100% recovery, and my understanding is a lot of people unfortunately deal with nerve pain for the rest of their lives.

But if surgery is necessary, the goal is usually to reconnect severed nerves, or to take some healthy nerves from one part of your body, and use them in the damaged area, just like a skin graft.

Re: Homeless Man Set on Fire - Kingston, Jamaica

What blows my mind is that in the video he's still alive and standing and looks like a human being. No one did anything to prevent him from turning into the pile of goop seen in the pictures? Wow. Wish the camera ran longer so we could see him melt
