He was drunk and tried to jump up and get his upper body through the gap between the gate and roof. at some point while trying to do this he broke his neck (drunk) and was hanging there because his head got wedged in the gap.

Can't count how many mornings I've woke outside my gate in that same position.

Someone explain how this happened, please. So he stuck his head in and couldn't tilt it to the side to try and get it out? Did he lose consciousness in a matter of seconds and broke his neck from the weight of his body "hanging" there?
