Re: Gordon Smiley: Original ABC Broadcast 5/15/82 (HQ Video and Pictures)
Horrible for everybody who was there that day in the stands Horrible for his wife and children, family and friends Horrible for him for about 1 second, remember the Doctor who signed his death certificate said that the blunt force trauma was so off the charts that Smileys death was so instantaneous with the impact of his car that it could not be measured in time and he did not feel anything And in the one second after his tires gripped the track and sent him straight into the wall im sure he thought or said "Oh shit!" and tried to duck his head down (pop the player out to widescreen and watch the first angle in slo-mo you can see him try to duck down and try to brace himself) thats all he had time for When I first heard about the crash from my father I remember asking him how bad it hurt before he died and my dad said from what he saw on the news back in 1982 it happened so fast that he didnt even have time to think about how bad it was going to hurt I have a newscast from that night somewhere that I got from a Youtube race fan from Minneapolis I think Let me dig it out and post it |

Man, talk about hitting a brick wall! I don't think you could survive that crash with today's safety standards in place. I don't know the actual speed but I'm sure it was probably around 200mph. I've seen those guys up close at the Houston Grand Prix and it was raining. You have to see in person to really appreciate the speed and driving skills those crazy bastard truly have. Amazing!
