Re: Google Engineer, 31, Jumps to Death in NYC
I used to work at another well known tech company from 1999 - 2004. Business Development. Met the founders of Google a couple of times and worked with many other Google employees and generally they were nice people... slightly wacky with way too much money. But that was kind of during their "toddler" phase, if you will. Still a fairly young company. The tech world was cutthroat and very competitive back then... but it is far worse now. Technology has advanced expeditiously since then and the general public is more aware of all the shit they do behind the scenes. Despite this... many of us still use all of this shit. I think about this more than I'd like to admit. With the layoffs that someone else mentioned and everything I just said, stories like this are not really a surprise. Sadly. Highly recommend the documentary on Netflix "The Social Dilemma" if you haven't seen it yet. Eye opener. https://www.netflix.com/title/81254224 My previous signature was a quote from that documentary... "There are only two industries that call their customers 'users': illegal drugs and software," - Edward Tufte

See this is what happens when you ask "Hey Google, can I skydive without a parachute?" instead of asking "Hey Google is it safe to skydive without a parachute?"
