So this was probably for the best, of course only if it’s absolute truth that he had his hand in killing people too.

What makes you think these assholes had meant the rope to go in the victims mouth? It is very clear that they wanted to strangle him to death. Are you not seeing that?

And they are using the shovel handle, ending part of the rope tied around it and they are at least 2 people holding up the shovel.
Probably more “comfortable” doing it that way than with using an actual garrote, one of them would have to be up close and personal twisting it.
