What is it about getting shot in that area of the body that's so fatal? Your intestines are in that area but the really important organs are higher up on your chest.

You do have some important organs in that area but it's my understanding that damage to the arteries in that location can incapacitate you pretty quick. The main function of an artery is to deliver oxygenated blood directly from the heart, to the rest of the body. So once your organs get cut off from that vital blood and oxygen, they start shutting down which, depending on the wound isn't always immediately fatal, but....... Your body's fight or flight response kind of fucks you over. The adrenaline surge that would be used to help you whoop some ass, or to get away from the danger, actually ends up hastening your death from the accelerated heartbeat. And its not just gunshots that could cause this, a stabbing in that location can incapacitate you just as quick. There's a lot of videos on the site that will show someone getting stabbed in the back, they try to run away but don't get far and just drop. |

I think it's hard for most people to imagine just how quickly blood pressure can bottom out to nothing due to gunshots, even without much external bleeding.
