Re: Girl Distracted on Cellphone Falls in Water and Drowns

The people I knew died in the summer. Stick your foot in a lake in the middle of the night, even on a warm night.
I can vouch for that...I went on a school trip to a lake and during one day it was boiling hot nearly 40 degrees and we had capsized a 4 person canoe in the lake and the cold is so immense, it grips you, at night we would have been fucked.

Must have been cold there, there is snow blowing across the camera lens. If this was Beijing, it is at the same latitude as Chicago, so the water would have been icy cold. But if she had been able to swim, she could have made it to the steps and climbed out. Too bad.....
She's not wearing winter clothing...

Yep, and not a lot of people understand how people drown in cold water. When my friends died, people who were there said, "why didn't they swim, they looked like they were pissing about, splashing about".

Well we found out soon after why.

I've taken this from Wikipedia page regarding drowning:

The actual cause of death in cold or very cold water are usually lethal bodily reactions to increased heat loss and to freezing water, rather than any loss of core body temperature. Of those who die after plunging into freezing seas, around 20% die within 2 minutes from cold shock (uncontrolled rapid breathing and gasping causing water inhalation, massive increase in blood pressure and cardiac strain leading to cardiac arrest, and panic), another 50% die within 15 – 30 minutes from cold incapacitation (loss of use and control of limbs and hands for swimming or gripping, as the body 'protectively' shuts down the peripheral muscles of the limbs to protect its core),[15] and exhaustion and unconsciousness cause drowning, claiming the rest within a similar time.[17] A notable example of this occurred during the sinking of the Titanic, in which most people who entered the −2 °C (28 °F) water died within 15–30 minutes.[

I am honestly of the belief that this woman hit cold water, thus gasping and panicking and unable to control her body correctly. She went under within 3 minutes ffs. That's not exhaustion, and the height was only 5ft.

Females from PRC China have an average height of 5' .08" if she was average or short she would easily drown in 5' of water if she couldn't swim

People should pay attention to what happens around them. Look where you walk and don't wear headphones so nobody can sneak up on you. You're not supposed to feel comfortable in public - that's why you have home. It's a dangerous world and you should be ready to fight or run at any moment.

Bit baffled myself, in my country ice swimming in the middle of winter is a rather common habit. The body usually does not go to shock so fast that you get incapacitated immediatly when plunging in ice-cold water. My guess would be that she also got a concussion or her leg broke during the fall, at least it looks a little bit like her left foot is facing the wrong way during the fall around the five second mark. Those two things alone can cause a wide shock so you add that to the cold shock and she suddenly doesnt have the time to come back to her senses until its too late.

Re: Girl Distracted on Cellphone Falls in Water and Drowns

Even if she was under 5ft. She managed to stay afloat splashing for about 3 minutes... so what changed? I'm sure that's not typical exhaustion so soon. Hyperventilation causing blackout? Look at say Canada's figures on cold water drownings. 50% of the people who drowned were swimmers. 12% even had lifejackets on. 43% were less than 2 metres away from safety but couldn't move to get there. The percentage of drownings increases as the water temperature gets lower. An average adult person has a 50/50 chance of surviving a 50 yard swim in 50 F. water.
