Re: Getting Stoned
that line was talking about the extremists and how "they" perceive it . . . . although both the quran, the bible and quite possibly every other one has some pretty horrible verses in it - hence why i did not point out any particular religion and gave a blanket statement covering all religions however, it certainly seems that there is one religion that has many more extremists than all of the others put together . . . hence why they keep making the news. there are some very good people (and very bad) in every single religion, but one seems to have an almost monopoly on the atrocities that happen throughout the world |

Re: Getting Stoned
ok well I guess your posts just confused me a bit because I could not tell if you were hating on religion mindlessly or putting the blame on the flawed people who make up religious populations. But I think I see where your mind is at and we could probably argue religion but I think deep down we probably feel a similar way.

Re: Getting Stoned
I would put it this way. The teachings of Christ are a major advance over the Old Testament practices. (I leave to the side the extent to which nominal Christians follow their founder's teachings.) The O.T. practices had much in common with those of other Semitic peoples of that region and era. Indeed, in some respects they were even an advance over the local competitors which sanctioned human sacrifice and idol worship. Comparative religion is often a matter of degrees. In an era of barbarism, the lessening of barbarities is an improvement. I think that a major difference between us is that I look at these things more in terms of nuances and matters of degree while you tend toward blanket and absolute condemnations. When it comes down to particular practices we are often in agreement. |

Re: Getting Stoned
The main point is that people who rabidly adhere to an ideology which purports to encompass/explain all of reality, or at least all of human existence, are often willing to do anything to those who refuse to accept their belief system, including killing them since they stand in the way of the ultimate victory of the true faith. Secular ideologies may be held with all of the fervor of religious ones, with the resultant extreme behaviors.

Re: Getting Stoned
Everything in this world is neither just good or just evil. It always depends on how it is used. Even a glass of water that saves a man from severe thirst can also be used to drown the same man if one wants it so. Thats is what people are good at. using anything for their own benefit. greed. even when they give out, it is usually given out if they would benefit from it, (Fame, future deals, social standing, reputation), so it is still all about greed. Religion like everything else, is just a tool for most people at the top. Not every law and practices stated in the Old Testament was from God. Most of it were invented and implemented by human rulers and juries at that era, to mislead those who wants to lead good lives, and God was just letting human create their own follies to punish them later. |
