Germany: Car Drives into Christmas Market

A car drove into a Christmas market in the German city of Magdeburg. At least five people, including a child, were killed and 200 injured. According to local authorities, it was a terrorist attack.

The suspect is a 50-year-old doctor of Saudi origin who has lived in Germany since 2006. German media describe the man as an "Islam critic" who has been a supporter of the far-right AfD party in recent years and of Elon Musk.

Around 7 p.m., a black BMW drives into the Christmas market in the German city of Magdeburg. Images on social media show the car driving straight through several Christmas stalls. The vehicle is said to have traveled a total of 400 meters.

The collision leaves 5 people dead, including a child. The number of injured has now risen to over 200 people. It is said to involve 41 seriously injured, 90 seriously injured and over 80 slightly injured.

About an hour later, shortly after a police raid on a home in Bernburg, a suspect is arrested.

Police confirmed that the suspect is a 50-year-old man from Saudi Arabia who has been living in Germany since 2006.

In the meantime, more and more details are emerging about the suspected perpetrator. According to German media such as Die Welt and Der Spiegel, and the news agency Reuters, the suspect is Taleb Al Abdulmohsen, a doctor from Bernburg, about 50 kilometers from Magdeburg.

The man is said to have fled Saudi Arabia in 2006 from the Saudi regime and from Islam. Saudi Arabia is said to have warned the German security services about the man up to three times, according to both Der Spiegel and the news agency Reuters.

The man is described as an "Islam critic" who openly turned against Islam. In an interview with the Frankfurter Allgemeine Zeitung, he called himself "the most aggressive critic of Islam in history." He also describes himself as an outspoken Islam critic on social media pages.

German Interior Minister Nancy Faeser says the suspect is Islamophobic. According to her, this was "clearly visible."

According to Die Welt, he also admires Elon Musk and has openly expressed his support for the radical right-wing party Alternative für Deutschland (AfD). According to Die Welt, the man is said to have shared on social media that "Germany wants to Islamize Europe".

According to Der Spiegel, in addition to his social media platforms, he also managed a website with information about the German asylum system and was active in advising Saudi women who wanted to flee their country. In recent video messages, he claimed that the German state was involved in a "secret operation" to persecute Saudi ex-Muslims worldwide.

The background to the crime is not yet clear," a police spokesperson said. "We are considering all scenarios." It was previously stated that the perpetrator acted alone, but the investigation will have to provide more clarity about the details of the attack.
