A goalkeeper died after being hit by a ball in the chest during a futsal match during the 2025 Independence Day games on Monday night (1).

The victim, identified only as Édson, suffered a strong impact to the chest while saving a penalty kick. After the save, he walked a few meters across the court but collapsed shortly afterward.

First responders provided first aid at the scene, and the athlete was taken to São Miguel Hospital, but did not survive. The cause of death is under investigation.

Damn, I remember when Damar Hamlin collapsed from that in an NFL game but he got hit by some dude's shoulder pad. I never really thought about a speeding soccer ball having enough impact to do that but then again I remember the long-term brain injuries that some players get from headers.

Always amazes me that nobody starts CPR! Ball probably interrupted his heard rhythm. CPR and a defib. He'd have probably survived. Seemed more interested in getting him off the pitch. Clueless!
