Re: Four People Killed, None Wearing Seatbelts
This is definitely a possibility but I'd still rather gamble with it on :) I witnessed a car accident that a very good friend of mine was in when he lost control in the rain and hit a tree basically head-on (drivers side front corner) at about 50-60mph and if he had been wearing his seatbelt he would have had no chance to survive it. The drivers compartment was completely crushed and he somehow ended up in the back seat. At the very least he would have lost his legs because the dash was pushed into the drivers seat. He was still severely injured, internal bleeding, lost his spleen, several broken bones, stiches everywhere, etc...but he fully recovered. If I hadn't witnessed the accident, I don't think I would have believed he was driving the car. BUT, on the flipside...He had a front seat passenger with him who also wasn't wearing his seatbelt and he was even more seriously injured when he was ejected from the car, but he did also survive & fully recover. If the passenger had been wearing his seatbelt he would have been much better off, the passenger side wasn't nearly as destroyed as the drivers side and it had air bags. If only there were dash cams back then, I was 2 cars behind him!! I'd certainly be dead if I wasn't wearing my seatbelt when I rolled my Toyota Tacoma (6-7 times according to witnesses) about 10 years ago. I walked away basically uninjured other than a few small cuts (none that needed stiches) and some bumps & bruises...I was home from the hospital like 3 hours after the accident. It's a pic of a pic so not the best quality... |

Re: Four People Killed, None Wearing Seatbelts
You can tell that the people in the Fiat were not wearing their belts while the people in the VW were. You can see seats in the VW was not deformed from people slamming about inside the car. Hence, most of the fatalities were in the Fiat. It a dumb *&^% in the rear of your car doesn't wear a seatbelt, in a high speed crash they can kill you in the the front seat, when their body slams into you at 75 MPH... It is a very rare exception when a seatbelt causes someone to be worse off. Happens, but not very often at all.

Re: Four People Killed, None Wearing Seatbelts
In this case, the driver of a Fiat was wearing a seatbelt, but the people sitting in the back seat weren't... That guy behind him flew on top of him with massive force, killing them both. Eventually all of them would've probably survived the impact, if those on the back seat had worn a seatbelt |

Re: Four People Killed, None Wearing Seatbelts
Some years ago, when I was just hanging out in the city with a friend, just driving around... My friend got a call from couple of girls who wanted us to pick them up from some night club... We picked them up and soon after I realized that they hadn't put their seatbelts on and told them they should put them on, they asked: "Why would we need seatbelts?" |
