Four Commuters Killed After Falling from Overcrowded Trains

India, yesterday a tragic accident occurred near Mumbra railway station in Thane, Maharashtra, during the morning rush hour around 9:00 AM.

Four commuters, including a 34-year-old Government Railway Police (GRP) constable named Vicky B. M, died, and 9 others were injured after falling from two overcrowded local trains traveling in opposite directions.

The incident took place between Diva and Mumbra stations, a stretch known for its sharp curves and overcrowding.

Preliminary investigations suggest that passengers hanging onto the footboards of the high-speed trains collided with each other, possibly triggered by a commuter’s bag brushing against others, causing a domino-like fall.

Overcrowding and possible scuffles among passengers were also cited as contributing factors.

Eyewitnesses described a chaotic scene, with some passengers falling after a bag or object struck them, and the emergency chain was pulled multiple times, but the train did not stop until reaching the station, about 12 km away.

The victims included Mayur S, an IT engineer; Tushar B, a 22-year-old data entry operator and Ketan D. S, a 23-year-old call center employee, alongside the GRP constable.

The injured were rushed to a Hospital with two in critical condition transferred to private hospitals.

The Thane railway police have registered four accidental death reports and are investigating further, recording survivor statements.

In response, the Railway Ministry announced plans to introduce non-AC local trains with automatic doors, louvred doors, roof-mounted ventilation, and inter-coach vestibules to address overcrowding and improve safety.

The first redesigned train is expected to be ready by November 2025 and operational by January 2026 after testing. Maharashtra Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis ordered a probe, and the state government, along with the railways, promised ₹5 lakh compensation for the families of the deceased.

Activists and politicians, including BJP MLC Niranjan Davkhare, have renewed calls for new local train services originating from Diva to ease congestion on the Thane-Diva corridor, which has a history of commuter-related incidents.

Public and political reactions highlighted systemic issues. Maharashtra Navnirman Sena chief Raj Thackeray blamed the railway system’s collapse on migrant influx, while NCP (SP) leader Sharad Pawar urged immediate safety measures like automatic doors.

Shiv Sena (UBT) leader Aaditya Thackeray criticized the railway minister, calling him a “reel minister” for failing to address recurring accidents.

A 2023 PIL in the Bombay High Court had previously flagged thousands of annual deaths on Mumbai’s suburban railway, underscoring the ongoing safety crisis.

The Mumbra accident has reignited debates about Mumbai’s overburdened railway network, with 6,976 commuter deaths reported from falls since 2009, emphasizing the urgent need for infrastructure upgrades and crowd management solutions.

Indians and trains are like: "Love and marriage, love and marriage, go together like a horse and carriage. Ask the local gentry and they will say its elementary."

India in the news again.

Defiantly something in the water there.

Gotta love the safety features of the Indian trains. Automatic ejection of overloaded people onto the tracks

Re: Four Commuters Killed After Falling from Overcrowded Trains

It says possibility the accident was caused by ‘scuffling amongst passengers’. The stupid MFrs asked and got what they deserved.

Nothing that ever happens in India should ever be described as “tragic”
