Re: Fatal Shooting of Student Holding Frying Pan and Cleaver

Yea, but why did the cops let this suspect not only get back up, but return to his frying pan, forcing them to kill him. I am not cop or a hand to hand combat expert, but what would have been the problem with tackling the suspect to put him under arrest after they tased him and shot him the first time, which disarmed him, neutralizing the threat he posed.

And then they literally allowed him to get back up and killed him as soon as he grabbed his frying pan. Doesn't seem like the best de-escalation tactics, at least. And that is something I know a little bit about...I am pretty much a professional de-escalator in my day job, haha
I get what you are saying, I totally do, but regardless of the intentions of the police in this instance you cant add fuel the the fire. Would have been nice for them to just arrest him. I dont agree with killing him but you better comply or risk death in those situations.

Re: Fatal Shooting of Student Holding Frying Pan and Cleaver

What the fuck, did half of you posters even bother to read the accompanying data?

The kid had had a car accident a week before and had been exhibiting signs of severely altered behavior ever since, finally leading up to this. Chances are extremely high that he was suffering from a traumatic (and untreated) brain injury that was severely impacting his judgement and ability to perceive reality.

My roommate's girlfriend in college had a similar incident and it took almost 6 weeks before she was not having regular hallucinations and properly engaging social filters.

This was a perfectly normal kid with no criminal record, no known history of violence, and recent history of possible traumatic brain injury.

Now, it is extremely sad that the cops felt the need to do what they did. Maybe I'd have done the same thing. Maybe they truly felt they had no choice. They didn't have all of the information going in and made snap judgments as necessary

But we DO have the benefit of added information after the fact, and you ignorant jagoffs coming here and making racist remarks or calling this kid an idiot who deserved to die make me fucking sick. You have a fuller understanding of the situation than the officers at the scene did and you still want to denigrate this kid and rejoice in his tragic and unfortunate death?

Sometimes I really hate this place and most of the people in it.
Life goes on and another will fill in the blanks.. Sorry for not sharing the same empathy... Mental health and trauma patients all have their own set of circumstances. Its shitty, but regardless shooting is justified and that's a fact

Re: Fatal Shooting of Student Holding Frying Pan and Cleaver

Yeah, def a legal kill, that is what happens when you don't listen to police commands when they got their guns pointed at you, doesn't matter what your mental state might be. You prob gonna be shot if you don't do what they say.

I can totally understand the perp's dad's point of view tho. Why did those 4 officers not immediately jump in to tackle the guy after he went down the first time and they identified the knife behind his head and kicked it away? I know it is easy for me to say cuz I was not there, and those cops were probably scared, but come on, they looked like 4 big boys and it seemed obvious the guy was having a mental episode and unable/unwilling to understand any commands and that he had to be restrained ASAP, so I just don't get why all the cops seemed to keep him in their cross-hairs until he eventually forced them to pull the trigger.

Cops are trained in hand to hand combat too, right? And 4 against 1 with a guy who at most is armed with a blunt frying pan.. Really couldn't just dog pile the guy and place him under arrest?

I would not be happy with the cops if I was this guy's dad, but the cops acted reasonably within their training. I just think they probably could have done more to save the guy instead of letting the situation escalate to where they were forced to shoot.
It boggles my mind that people actually believe that when a cop tells you to do something with their guns drawn on you, you have the option of not complying.

Sure, but it sounds like it was written by the same folks who placed the flowers. Any time the police are forced to kill a criminal, the bleeding hearts and racists think it's their duty to spew lies to make it look like the murder of an innocent. "He was just out getting some skittles." Whatever. Why should I believe them? They always lie.
But if the guy had a brain injury that caused his behavior, OK. Then I take it all back and blame all of us who let the mentally ill be "mainstreamed". He should have been under observation at a facility.

The dad didn't see his kid attacking anyone? Then he is one blind and dumb motherfucker. You can hear the scrape of the cleaver on the cement at :40 when he jumps up.

Well, his eggs are definitely going to be sunny side up when they plant him in the ground, that’s for damn sure.

Re: Fatal Shooting of Student Holding Frying Pan and Cleaver

Mental Health Illnesses are real. I am sorry he was killed. He deserved mental health treatment, not death.
But this is why I will never call 911 for EMT help, for myself. And absolutely never, when I am having a mental breakdown. Read one too many cases of people needing to be taken to the hospital, but end up brutally assaulted/killed, in a bodybag.
I know the insanity that goes on in your head when you’ve gone off the mental illness medication or when you begin to experience mental health issues. Literally feeling like your brains are scrambling. They are both equally terrifying experiences.
No fucking lies, I lock myself in my house, down some pills to numb me, and wait for it to pass. Because I’d be scared to call for help when this is what can happen to you.
Don’t do this to your friends, your loved ones, your kids.
He was acting extremely different for a week...if his friends and family saw this, they should have paid more attention and gotten him to the hospital.

Re: Fatal Shooting of Student Holding Frying Pan and Cleaver

A fucking miracle when you see footage of cops in other countries, disarming people without needing to unreasonably assault the person or use guns.
How is that? People can be wielding machetes, swords, hammers, wallets, cell phones, and instead of killing someone in desperate need of help...they do their job to help. Not kill like these psychotic bloodthirsty creep cops of America. And these are the ones considered Heroes?

Re: Fatal Shooting of Student Holding Frying Pan and Cleaver

Hey Ved,

I just want to say thank you for what you do.

When I say something like “this is a just killing by the police”, I do not mean that “the deceased deserved to die”

What I mean is that the police have a job to protect the public at large, including themselves. When someone is a threat to the public, they need to be neutralized.

The man was holding a weapon and was using it in an aggressive manner. The police tried to taze him with no response... they then used the ultimate solution...

Yes this man was not thinking well. Yes this man was not in his right mind. Yes, this situation was tragic. However I feel the police acted appropriately given the situation and the knowledge at hand.
