Re: Fallen Biker Dies As Grim Reaper Strolls By

Lane splitting is illegal here and everywhere else in NA with the exception of maybe Cali. This is probably the reason why.
Actually lane splitting is illegal everywhere in the U.S., including California. What is legal in CA is lane filtering.

lane splitting = riding between moving vehicles
lane filtering = riding between stopped vehicles

Splitting is illegal for obvious reasons... But filtering is now legal in CA because it helps cut down on heavy traffic.

Lane splitting refers to a two-wheeled vehicle moving between roadway lanes of vehicles that are proceeding in the same direction. More narrowly, it refers to overtaking slow or stopped vehicles by traveling between lanes. It is also sometimes called lane sharing, whitelining, filtering, or stripe-riding. Alternatively, lane splitting has been used to describe moving through traffic that is in motion while filtering is used to describe moving through traffic that is stopped.

In general, lane splitting by motorcycles is legal in parts of Europe, Japan, and several other countries. In most US states, lane splitting is illegal with one notable exception being California. Additionally, the legal restrictions for lane splitting in each US state for motorcycles generally apply to bicycles as well. However, in some states such as Nebraska and Utah, lane splitting is prohibited specifically and only for motorcycles and is therefore legal for bicycles.

This accident must of occurred somewhere where lane splitting is legal since every bike on the road was in fact splitting lanes.

Ah, it seems you're correct about the legality of it in CA... I've always been told otherwise by fellow riders and I guess I never bothered to confirm it myself.

As for the use of "filtering" vs. "splitting", notice it says:

Alternatively, lane splitting has been used to describe moving through traffic that is in motion while filtering is used to describe moving through traffic that is stopped.
Myself and most others who actually ride (at least where I live, which is the eastern shore of the U.S.) go by these terms to differentiate between the two. Usually when saying "I don't lane split, but I do filter."

Anyway, judging by the makes of the vehicles and the size/shape of the tags, I think this occurred outside the U.S.
