Apparently it was farmland they previously "owned" (in quotation marks because private property isn't a recognized thing in communist countries) that had been seized by the government.

Surprise surprise. This is why the law to private property is basically sacred. Get rid of private property and the government can do anything they want. And government power is rarely used for good in desperate situations.
