same situation here in Philippines... Many farmers and residents lives/cultivate on land acquired only by rights (which every next in the power seat tries to void so they will come up with money to renew their rights to hold that property).

Eventually a big investor will come up and wants to buy that land for other purposes and leaves the previous residents with almost nothing.

But if it was me, i would not waste time living in a place or toiling a land that is not really my own in the first place.

Thats what i tell most of friends i have ion those areas... That they squat on a land not their own, that the real owner let them live there for years free of charge. What is wrong if the owner wants to use their land now and those who lived on them did not save enough to have homes of their own somewhere else?

I also came from a poor family but so far, most of our family member from up the chain of generation, refused to waste time and effort trying to inhabit places offered on rights only. some though agreed to toil lands by riughts but were wise enough to use the profits from it to purchase their own bits of lands no matter how small it was.

Most cases of this started with one greedy government worker or some big shot connected to one.

They find acres of arable land long abandoned by owners, or one with questionable ownership due to many claimants and put on hold, or just simply a piece of government land not going to be used in the near future yet.

They pull strings and make a legal office offering the land for habitation but of course there are fees to be paid for processing of documents, fees for development of subdividing the area, a little monthly membership dues for the association.

In some cases, a big construction company will be along to offer credits for construction material with huge interest rates.

this goes on until the the real owner wants to take over and those developers who started it will be gone.
