In a rare admission of potential guilt after 16 months of bloody civil war filled with a dizzying array of crimes, Ethiopia's government has vowed to investigate "the extremely savage act" and punish those responsible.
The Telegraph could not independently verify the video. However, on Sunday the state-affiliated Ethiopian Human Rights Commission (EHRC) said government forces were responsible for burning an ethnic Tigrayan man to death.
The rights group, which has often been muted of government abuses, said a Tigrayan man was "burnt alive... with the participation of government security forces and other people".
The atrocity occurred in early March near Ethiopia's borders with Sudan and South Sudan. The rights group said it followed an attack a day earlier that left at least 20 people dead.
"The bodies of the deceased were taken by security forces to a nearby forest and burned," the EHRC said in a statement, citing eyewitness testimony.
"In between this, an ethnic Tigrayan who was suspected of having contact with the deceased was arrested... and thrown [on the pyre] with the deceased, with him dying of fire burns," the EHRC quoted eyewitnesses as saying. "Those who were in the area were Ethiopian army soldiers, Amhara region special police forces and Southern region police forces."
In November 2020, a power struggle between the federal government and the regional government of Tigray in northern Ethiopia exploded into an all-out civil war based along ethnic lines. Tens of thousands have since been killed, and millions have been pushed to the edge of starvation.
While many Western nations have been deeply critical of the manifold abuses by the Ethiopian government forces and their allies, few African nations have spoken out.
