Re: Elderly Man Commits Suicide by Cop
Yea it sucks for the dog. Cop should had told him that his dog loves him, cant kill yourself and leave your dog to fend for himself.

Re: Elderly Man Commits Suicide by Cop
Wellness check. Dude called "the hospital" and said some shit that gave folks a legit reason to think he was having a crisis. Cop had sound PC/RS for being there and was obligated to effect a solution of some sort. He didn't want to arrest the guy outright without trying a more peaceful approach first, but he had to talk to the guy to do that and couldn't just leave, especially after the guy admitted to calling whoever he called. But ol' boy wasn't trying to hear it, and acted on a bad impulse because his head wasn't in the right place at the time. Once the shotgun came out, the cop's options became very limited. He *could* have "sprung into action" and tried to take the shotgun away the instant he saw it, but he wasn't prepared for that and he was still in friendly mode so he wasn't able to use that moment before his window closed. It would have been a very commendable above-and-beyond response, but I don't blame him for missing his window and having to go with Plan B. Retreating to exit the residence was also an option, but it would have made him easier to shoot and made it harder for him to defend himself; and it still would have resulted in a suicidal man holed up with a shotgun, in which case the officer could have been held liable if ol' boy had then killed himself because he retreated instead of trying to stop him. Shooting was obviously the last thing he wanted to do. If ol' boy was willing to take it that far in the presence of a cop, then he was most likely dead either way. Can't say now whether he had actually snapped to that degree, but he sure as fuck looked like he had. I'd also like to know if the guy actually raised the shotgun or not, but this isn't really a bad shoot even if he didn't. This guy wasn't a "down" kind of suicidal, but rather an angry kind of suicidal, and that *is* the kind of suicidal that can choose to hurt someone else before it checks out. TL;DR, DR (arr, cuz I'm a pirate): Shitty situation all around, and they should have sent 2 cars. Cop acted legally and in good faith, tried his best to de-escalate the situation, but at the worst all he did was make a few mistakes that any human being, trained or not, could have made in that situation. He went in friendly, but he should have gone in with a little more adrenaline ready than he did. At least that's my take. |
