A 3 point seat belt is primarily designed for head-on collisions, a side impact from the unrestrained shoulder side is always going to result in bad retention. It's why racing drivers wear 4 or 5 point harnesses, but road car drivers prefer freedom of movement and less restrictions over ultimate safety.
The driver's airbag did deploy from the secondary impact (depending on the force vector of initial side impact, they aren't always triggered as can cause more issues if you don't hit it square, as from a head-on impact) it doesn't deploy behind the wheel, the driver has broken the wheel which then got pulled down and the bag went behind it.

Everyone saying about Chinese quality seat belts and airbags...you know they are the same Chinese manufactured parts as fitted to western cars, yeah?

That may be true but from the video you see the ‘female’-end of the seatbelt system has nothing plugged in

My dad used to do the same thing when he was driving us - taking his eyes off the road to stare at random shit for a few seconds. It drove me crazy. I'm amazed he didn't kill us all.

I think the airbag actually killed him .. he was maybe ok after the initial hit until the airbag broke his neck I think ..

That's what happens when you drive like an Asian.
Why the hell was he staring to the side for so long instead of concentraring on the road? Asian people already have it very hard with their narrow visual angle to impair it even further by looking to the side.
The car came from the opposite side he was staring at and he didn't have any chance to see it coming.
He didn't keep looking forward while driving, it is his fault!

I didn't think he had a seatbelt on until I watched it a second time to see that he in fact did have it on! The seatbelt failed and so did his airbags, wow.

Probably on purpose since many people don't like the seatbelt to cut thru their neck & shoulder, but will wear it loosely, because they could get a ticket.
But it's his body as a shield that saved her from diving thru the front of the car & thru the window.
~ The so called air bag was just a prop, to make more money on the vehicle sale. And it didn't deploy until his body hit forward on the steering wheel.

He became her human airbag.

Chinese seatbelts work about as good as everything else from China

A seatbelt going diagonally works for front and rear collisions only, in a side crash the body slips to the side effortlessly, as is shown in this video.
It's the reason race cars have a five point harness.
