Just hours after the massacre at a pool hall in Santo Domingo, another violent incident shook Ecuador when an armed attack took place in Manabí, a coastal province plagued by organized crime gangs.

Four men arrived at the crime scene yesterday in a car, two of whom got out and proceeded to open fire, first at two people, then entered and opened fire on people playing cards in a building.

In addition, 2 kilometers from the attack, an abandoned vehicle containing the gunmen and clothing was found.

Four people died at the scene, and their bodies were scattered along the main road. The remaining people died in the hospital, and another man was injured.

As of October 12, Manabí recorded 967 crimes, exceeding the number recorded in all of 2023, the year in which criminal violence hit record highs in the province.

Manabí is known for being a stronghold of drug gangs such as Los Choneros, whose leader, alias 'Fito', was extradited to the United States, and also of groups such as Los Pepes.

Ecuador, on the other hand, is experiencing a very violent year, with more than 6,700 homicides recorded between January and September of this year alone.
