Use VLC Media Player to run the video slowed right down (3 or 4 times clicking on Slower under Playback> Speed) to see exactly what happens. I cincur with the view that it's the best way to go, happy, swaggering and unassuming then suddenly the lights go out after one firm crack. Scientists say a head still has consciousness 7 seconds after decapitation but I think the guy was lucky to be spared even that.

The brain isn't destroyed in decapitation, but his was due to the cranial destruction (gore spray visible if you scrub through slowly). He was already in decorticate position when the train clocked his knee and rolled him over some more. So for him it was instant. BOOM. Gone. At least he went out with a smirk and a strut.
