The big guy did everything wrong. Let the assailant get right in the perimeter, moved in on him after the guy reached into his pocket. There is no loss of valor in turning and running if you can square up on your owns terms. Of course, if you are a drunken idiot this advice falls on deaf ears.

When I was taking Krav Maga classes this was one of the first lessons and was reiterated constantly. I never paid attention to that before but it can literally be a life saver.
