you can see the guy is useing a mud box. that is to control the mud that sometimes explosively gushes out. there are several reasons for the mud to shoot out like that. the bit could be plugged and does not let the mud drain as they trip the pipe. sometimes the driller does that on purpose just to get everybody covered in mud, or they could have been pulling a test, thats when they attach a test tool to the bottom of nthe drill stem, run it in the hole and open it, that allows gas and oil into the pipe. when they pull the pipe back out it can blow out, thats how rigs burn down. something sparks the gas and oil and burns to the ground.
