If he didn't force himself to drown by sucking in a lungful of water (yeah I know there's a reflex that prevents that but still...), imagine the pain he'd feel after 20 seconds or so - it hurts your ears when you try to do your first 5 metre dive on holiday, now imagine after 50 metres or more, whilst still conscious... That anchor will drop him at quite a rate of knots.
