Sorry for joining the Necroposting-Train, but I can't help but view these people as actually being genuinely mentally ill (or dare I say it, even victims of their circumstances) - with how violent and worthless that human life appears to be in these parts of the world, I'd imagine people would very quickly go insane if they ever truly acknowledged the shitholes that they lived in.

To have to confront and try to make sense of that much barbarity on a daily basis (we have to look no further than the daily videos here on DR) necessitates coming up with all types of psychological defenses to prevent outright insanity, or even suicide.

It seems like the only option that's left is ‒ ironically ‒ to do just as equally insane shit, such as twerking on a dead corpse to find some scrap of meaning in an otherwise meaningless existence.

This assumes that everyone in this country (whichever it is) does this kind of stuff. I can guarantee you, they don’t.

Every country has their share of trashy, tacky people - and I say this clearly from my perspective, as I’d assume “tacky” is in the eye of the beholder. I’m sure most people, wherever this is, would find it bizarre.

This, to me, looks like the funeral of some gang/drug/cartel member. And that kind of shit is its own subculture. The definition of “unacceptable” is already different with people that are involved in this kind of stuff. But that doesn’t mean everyone in the country is involved with it. I’ve seen (in the news) bizarre funerals where the corpse is positioned to look as though he was chilling with a cigarette, riding a motorcycle, and even someone who gave a corpse a ride on the bike - in countries where most people were commenting how trashy and bizarre that is.

Trashy white/black/brown folk in the US and other developed countries must have some practices that appear bizarre to others. Maybe not this bizarre, but again I’m only judging from my perspective. I’d certainly be put off by this if I saw it, and there’s no way in hell you’d catch me hanging out with this crowd. Do I consider it “morally” wrong? Nah. But I definitely find it disturbing.

But I wouldn’t just assume, because of my rejection of this, that the entire country, or even a considerable amount of the population, would consider this to be normal. Regardless of how poor they are, or the misery they might live in.

Of course, I could be wrong, and there really is - somewhere out there - a country where twerking asses and crotches on dead people’s faces are the order of the day. But I doubt it. We would have seen a lot more of these videos, if so.

Yes, I see your point - I spend a lot of time googling how different cultures deal with death, and from the one funeral I've been to (my wrestling coach from high school), it was very formal and somber, very unlike what's happening in this video. Yet, I have read many accounts of how, for example, Filipinos are apparently okay with photographing their deceased relatives, which others have expressed distaste for.

One search phrase that was particularly interesting (using Google of course) was, “why do filipinos take pictures at funerals,” which resulted in a lot of reddit posts where the OP mentions this phenomenon, but many of the responses would indicate that this is actually a normal cultural norm in the Philippines.

I'd like to ask your thoughts on this phenomenon where people used to pose the corpses of family members and take pictures with them? I mean this certainly would be less egregious than what's happening in this video, but this might coincide with what you mentioned about how some corpses are “positioned to look as though he was chilling with a cigarette”

And I may be going on a tangent, but I’ve also ran across some peculiar historical phenomena where people seemed to go mad and would “react” by having hysterical fits of dancing whenever they were confronted by particularly harrowing circumstances that they could not otherwise control through their own volition - to summarize each one (very succinctly and very briefly):

Ee ja nai ka (1867-1868) - Japanese people dancing and partying as a result of societal changes / social upheaval

Ghost dance (late 1800s) - Native americans dancing in order to “bring the spirits to fight on their behalf, end American Westward expansion”

Dancing mania (14th-17th centuries) - Same thing except in Europe, which some sources say was caused by the miserable conditions people lived in at various times, to the point that they would dance until “they collapsed from exhaustion and injuries, and sometimes died”


Tl;dr History would indicate at least to some extent, that dancing seems to be a form of psychological coping mechanism when humans have been confronted by extreme / dire circumstances that would otherwise have them go insane / become self-destructive
